National Autism Awareness Month

April 2010

There are many people with autism in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. 1 out of every 100 people has autism.

You cannot always tell that someone has autism just by looking at them. Autism lasts for all of a person's life. But they can still do a lot of things and learn a lot of skills.

No Smoking Day

10th March

There's never been a better time to quit smoking. Today the UK leads the world with dedicated stop smoking services and a wide range of ways to help lessen your cravings.

Established in 1983, No Smoking Day works to support smokers who want to quit. The charity does this by raising awareness on No Smoking Day, which takes place on the second Wednesday in March every year, and highlighting the many sources of help available for quitters. The theme for 2010 is all about inspiring and enabling smokers to escape from their habit. The campaign image is of a smoker's hands breaking free from a chain of cigarettes and the strap line for the campaign is "Break free - we can help".

Food Allergy and Intolerance Week

25th - 29th January

During Food Allergy and Intolerance Awareness Week, Allergy UK hope that people who think they may have food related health problems will have their symptoms checked out, and find out what can be done to help them.

Thousands of people suffer from illnesses which are affected by what you eat such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Coeliac Disease, migraine and eczema but are unaware of how they should manage their condition. Because of this, Allergy UK has a telephone helpline 01322 619898 and websites http://www.allergyuk.org and http://www.foodintoleranceawareness.org/ to help.

What is a food allergy or intolerance?

Typically, an immediate food allergic reaction will involve the immune system. Within minutes, traces of the offending food in the diet can trigger generalised rashes, itching, diarrhoea, vomiting, swelling of the lips and soft tissues, breathing difficulties and even shock.
Food intolerance reactions have a slower onset than allergic reactions, don't involve the immune system and aren't usually life threatening. They're often called 'pseudo-allergic reactions'.  These reactions are usually dose-related, with small amounts of the food being tolerated but larger amounts leading to reactions such as urticaria, flushing, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea.
